Week 18 – A6c: Social objects and social networking

Engeström’s blog post.

‘The fallacy is to think that social networks are just made up of people. They’re not; social networks consist of people who are connected by a shared object.’

Engestrom asserts that social objects are a prerequisite for a successful social network. The social objects are visible in popular tools like Flickr, LinkedIn. The social object is not so appearant in other networks like Facebook and Twitter.

(refer to course material)

‘the notion of social objects is a useful approach when thinking about how networks are established and sustained.’
