This October, I launched the Family Code night initiative where 150 families participated in sessions introducing coding. These free sessions were open for Parents and Guardians together with their children aged from 8 to 11. Through this unique fun-filled, educational ‘family time’ activity qualified LEGO Education Academy Trainers sponsored by IMS ltd introduced participants to coding through the use of Lego Wedo kits. Such kits provide schools with a resource that may be used to encourage a student centred classroom where students work together whilst researching, building and coding. Thus gaining real-life experiences. These kits are nowadays available for all year 4, 5 and 6 primary state schools.
The scope of these family focused workshops has been to introduce parents to coding concepts which may be alien to adults. During the workshop, adults where assisted by their children whilst learning how to build and program a simple robot. These workshops were held in the recently refurbished Innovative Classroom within the Directorate for Digital Literacy and Transversal Skills, Education Building. This space has been conceived to explore how conventional classrooms and other learning spaces can be easily reorganised to support changing styles of teaching and learning.
We are seeking individuals who would like to help with the organisation and delivery of such coding sessions which will allow adults and their children learn to code in a fun, family oriented environment. Interested adults can apply via: https://form.jotform.com/73092284052958
