Activity 16.3

 From your activities this week, the case studies and readings in Block 1 and your own experience, write notes about the factors that contribute to a student either stopping using assistive technology or becoming a successful user.

From your notes pick out one or two factors that interested you and discuss them in your tutor group forum.

The one main factor for any student in pursuing a goal is Motivation. If the student feels that there is a valid reason why he/she should learn how to use a specific tool, then it will be much easier to become a successful user.

Apart motivation, previous activities show that there are other factors which determine such success;

  • available and appropriate training
  • identification of beneficial functionality in the tool i.e. The user finds more benefits than constraints when using the tool. Such constraints may include complex functionality and a steep learning curve.
  • availability and cost of tool.
